Weekly Chase: My 30 to 30 Challenge

Brace yourselves, guys…I’m ready to tear it up.

Today marks the day I start my 30 to 30 challenge. It’s my own personal challenge to myself as I approach…

My 30th Birthday!!

Let’s face it…I’ve already ended my 20s in a way I never thought I would. I’ve lost weight, I’ve worked toward a fabulous career change, and I’m officially a half marathoner. This past year has been beyond amazing, and I don’t plan to spend the last thirty days of my twenties slowing down. So, not only am I going to challenge myself to some hardcore fitness focus, but I’m going to challenge YOU, too.

The Weekly Chase has been a project that I have been doing for roughly a month now, and some great things have happened with it. I’ve met some incredible women, and I’ve seen them follow through in supporting each other. (I apologize if I fall behind…we’ve been preparing to move, and it should be happening this week! I will catch up!) I’d really like to see more of you get involved…and as an incentive…

I’m celebrating my birthday by hosting several giveaways, including products from ZICO Coconut Water, SPIbelt, Vega, Fit Approach (Sweat Pink Laces!!!), and several others. I don’t want to give it all away. ;) How it’s going to work, though, is like normal giveaways. But, if you’ve linked up that week, then you’ll be able to enter for more chances.

Last week’s goals for me were:

Goal #1: Stretching. I did fairly well on this…but I have to admit, I spent 99% of my time making memories in Chicago. It was terrible leaving my mom back there – I miss her so damn much. So, I got some good stretching in on Monday and Tuesday, but after that…I kind of neglected it.

Goal #2: Plan my mileage and cross training. Check. You’ll see that in a second.

Goal #3: Plan meals. Um, nope. Didn’t hit that one at all actually. This is what my kitchen currently looks like:

So now that we’ve gotten last week’s goals out of the way, let’s talk about my 30 to 30 challenge.

I’m going to be completely and utterly 100% honest with you and tell you that I whined over one thing the day of/after the race: how terrible I felt my arms and love handles looked in my photos. I know, I know. Someone beat me over the head, I had just ran a half marathon. I know. Sometimes, though, you need a little saw-my-photos-kick-in-the-ass to help you set some goals. What I saw wasn’t fat, though. What I saw was that I needed to do some toning up after a 12-week, 23-pound weight loss. After all the training I had taken on, what I realized was that I hadn’t paid enough attention to strength training and stretching.

My 30 to 30 challenge comes at a time when I have a few weeks off from half marathon training (my next is November 17th), and it’s all about the muscles. I’m in it for the strength this go-around. I want to start seeing some definition. I want to see my waistline whittling away (not disappearing, haha). I want to feel stronger, and I want to build a strong foundation for my next round of training. With that and running, though, I need to make sure I’m also focusing on stretching. I have 30 days until I’m 30. I already conquered one hell of a goal and I feel better than ever running into my 30s, but there really isn’t anywhere to go than up from here, right? So why not look and feel even better?

Goal #1: Workouts. I’m breaking them up into three priorities, and I will be focusing a lot on body weight movements, because, unfortunately, with this awesome move comes a gym that’s a bit far away. (I’m asking for a sandbag, a dumbbell set, and a treadmill for my birthday…hint hint hint for those wondering. ;))

  • Strength: Monday – Upper, Wednesday – Lower, Friday – Upper
  • Stretch: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday – Yoga
  • Running: Tuesday – 5 miles, Thursday – 3 miles, Saturday – 6 miles
  • Rest: Sunday

Goal #2: Meals. I’ll be logging my food, keeping my BodyMedia band on, and taking serious note on intuitive signals. If I want results, I know I need be on top of my meals. A big pro to this move? I have tons of space for and amazing vegetable garden next year!!!!

Goal #3: Pampering. I deserve it. I’ve been busting my ass and I need to pay a little attention to this aging (bwahahahahaha) body of mine. (Confession: it pisses me off when I see someone complain about turning 30 like it means “I’m old now”.)

There ya go. Might seem like hefty goals, but I promise it’s just the way I have it all laid out in detail for ya.

I’m excited for your 30 to 30 challenge and love your focus on strength training. It’s so important and I feel like it makes a huge difference in how I feel and look. You plan is definitely manageable. I’m still so happy for you for completing your half. So many good things in store for you and don’t believe them when they say that 30 is old! Bah! :-)

Great goals! Trust me, strength training is SO very important in running. I’ve fallen into the trap a few times where I didn’t want my legs to be sore for a long run so I’d skip my lower body weight workouts. Don’t do it!!!

Great plan! I completely understand photos being motivation like that. I’m the same way about my arms–I should follow your lead!

You have so many great things happening! And you do so much for the community. Give yourself some love for that one. The weekly chase has helped me find a new focus. And 30 is GREAT…although that was a LONG time ago for me – LOL!

I am glad you realized how silly you were for nitpicking your pictures ;-) you look incredible! Seriously amazed at all of your progress across the board. And I love these challenges, though I DO think you are piling on a wee bit much into a week! I hope some of these are just more long-term anyway, which I suspect they are?? Strength training will be great, those barre DVDs will help that too AND stretching :) XOXO

I berated myself in pics taken of me Saturday after the Warrior Dash. After I complained about a bit of muffin top that IS disappearing, just ever so slowly, my husband said, in an exasperated tone, “Lisa!” Sigh….so here goes the mantra (again) “It’s not about the scale or the way you look in pics, it’s ALL about being fit”. :) We’re out there doing it, working our arses off, so let’s give ourselves some credit! Happy birthday SPA sis :)

ROCK ON with the strength training my friend — you know I’m a giant giant GIANT fan of it, especially with running, so important to do both, for strong joints, strong core, strong everything! I love your goals for this week and for the 30 days leading in your birthday. PLEASE make sure the pampering gets in there — 30 is an amazing milestone, embrace it FULLY. I loved loved loved turning 30, and honestly – since hitting that 3-0 mark, I’ve found myself in the exact right ‘space’ in life in all aspects and I truly think age has something to do with that.

Seems like there are so many of us talking about strength training being the missing link in our running. I know it sure is mine! I’m working on that right along with you, so I’m looking forward to hearing how it’s making a difference for you. Looking forward to your new challenge as well!
